Hillside shrubland and grassland

Most of the hillside habitats in Hong Kong are grasslands and shrublands. Many hillsides are alternating between grasslands and shrublands due to frequent human-induced hillfires. Grasslands are mainly dominated by the grass family Poaceae, which can recover promptly after fire by preserving nutrient in underground vegetative parts. If the grasslands can consecutively be protected from hill fire for at least 10 years, they can be replaced by shrubs. Common shrub species in Hong Kong are Rose Myrtle (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa), Asian melastome (Melastoma candidum), Oblong-fffffleaved Litsea (Litsea rotundifolia), etc. Once the shrublands grow mature, they tend to have a stronger fire resistance. In addition to herbs and shrubs, the presence of bamboos and ferns (mainly Dicranopteris spp.) also enhance the habitat diversity.
