生境 Habitats

Site Description

Tung Chung River is in the northern part of Lantau Island and designated as one of the "Ecologically Important Streams" by AFCD. There is high species richness of freshwater fish (23 species), including the rare Acrossocheilus beijiangensis and the Giant Mottled Eel (Anguilla marmorata), a second class protected animal in China. There is also a number of amphibians found in Tung Chung River and its riparian zone such as Romer's Tree Frog (Liuixalus romeri), the "Near Threatened" Hong Kong Newt (Paramesotriton hongkongensis), Chinese Bullfrog (Hoplobatrachus chinensis) which is a state second class protected animal and the rare South China Cascade Frog (Amolops ricketti), etc. Despite its high ecological value, Tung Chung River is still an unprotected area and under threat from new town development.
