生境 Habitats

Site Description

Shing Mun reservoir is located near Tsuen Wan district, southwestern part of New Territories.  It is a part of Shing Mun Country Park. An exotic plantation tree species, Paper-bark Tree (Melaleuca cajuputi), is grown along the perimeter of the reservoir. In rainy season when the water level rises, special scenery of 'drowning Paper-bark Trees' can be seen. The major stream that feeds the reservoir is the Tai Shing Stream on the northwestern part of the reservoir, orginating from Tai Mo Shan. On the northern part of the reservoir, there is a dense forest developed from overgrowing fung shui woods relics of old Shing Mun villages, with more than 70 species of old trees growing. In order to protect the vegetation in that area, it is designated as Shing Mun Fung Shui Woodland Special Area as well as Site of Special Scientific Interest. There is high species richness of butterflies in the western part and around 120 species has been recorded. Along the Pineapple Nature Trail, there are two buttefly gardens where nectar plants and host plants are grown to attract butterflies.
