Ngau Keng

生境 Habitats

Site Description

Ngau Keng is a village located in Kam Tin. It was established and first inhabited by the Cheng family a century ago. At that time there was only one path into the village, through which villagers led their cattle in and out. Hence, the village was named 'Ngau Keng' (literally 'Cattle Trail Village'). Inside are two attractions, namely the Cheng Family Shrine and Ling Mui Chong, which are Grade III and Grade II Historic Buildings respectively. Every five years, the village holds a Da Jiu Festival, which is one of the village's features.

In the past most villagers were farmers, but now parts of the fields are abandoned and New Territories Small Houses set in. The cows remain and have become wild. Thanks to them, the abandoned farmlands have become freshwater wetlands which supports a lot of wildlife such as insects and amphibians. However, as Small Houses development continues, the wetland habitats are gradually destroyed.
