Lamma Island, with an area of about 13.7 square kilometres, is the third largest island in Hong Kong. It is located southwest of Hong Kong Island. Some better-known spots on the island include Yung Shue Wan, Sok Kwu Wan and Sham Wan. Sham Wan, located on the the southern side of the island, is the only permanent nesting ground for thte Green Sea Turtle, and thus the Hong Kong government listed the beach and surrounding waters as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1996. The zone is also specified to be a restricted area from 1st June to 31st October every year, during the nesting season of Green Sea Turtles. No entry is permitted in that period. 

In 2008, Hongkong Electric and the Conservancy Association established 3 eco-tour routes with educational panels along the routes for visitors to learn more about the local wildlife.
