Eagle‘s Nest and Beacon Hill

生境 Habitats

Site Description

Eagle's Nest is situated north of Cheung Sha Wan, Kowloon, and southeast of Beacon Hill. Both hills belong to the Lion Rock Country Park area. On the southern hillside is the Eagle's Nest Nature Trail, while on the northern side is the Maclehose Trail Section 5, which leads to the peak of Beacon Hill.

Eagle's Nest provides shelter for many black kites, hence the name. The Eagle's Nest Nature Trail is 3 km long, and apart from black kites, one can see quite a variety of plants, such as Shiuying Bamboo, lichen and Bunch-like Reevesia. Looking down the Trail once can see the Kowloon Reservoir, the first reservoir in the New Territories. The scenery of Eastern Kowloon can also be seen.

There are two tunnels through Beacon Hill, built in the 1910s and the 1980s respectively. The foot of the hill has been developed into a high-class residential area, due to the scenery of the Kowloon Peninsula and Victoria Harbour. At the top of Beacon Hill is a tower, which serves the Hong Kong Observatory in collecting weather data, as well as aiding the Airport in managing air traffic. There is a chance of spotting macaques on the hill.

Due to the discovery of several rare orchid species northeast of Eagle's Nest and north of the peak of Beacon Hill, the area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
